Music Publishers Canada applauds Budget 2022’s commitment to ensuring a strong, modern copyright regime

Today’s historic budget from Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland included several measures that will help support and bolster Canada’s creative industries and ensure that they thrive in a post pandemic economy.  Music Publishers Canada were especially encouraged by Budget 2022’s commitment to the creative industries sector through proposed legislative amendments to the Copyright Act to implement copyright term extension to life of the creator plus 70 years.

“For music publishers, composers and their songwriters, copyright is their paycheque. We applaud Budget 2022’s commitment to ensuring a strong, modern copyright regime through the implementation of copyright term extension,” said Margaret McGuffin, CEO of Music Publishers Canada.

This will allow Canadian songwriters and the small and large businesses that invest in them to succeed and thrive in a competitive global market.

Music publishers are innovators, and their focus on strong export strategies have allowed these entrepreneurs and Canadian companies to flourish internationally.

“We were encouraged to see the government stand up for Canada’s creative industries,” McGuffin said. “While the government had already agreed to do so under CUSMA, Music Publishers Canada is very pleased to see that the copyright term extension implementation will be done quickly without any accompanying measures.”
