Create Canada song camp and global partnerships at BANFF40 to foster opportunities for Canada’s growing music publishing sector

CALGARY, JUNE 6, 2019 — The Canadian Music Publishers Association is excited to announce its Create Canada song camp and expanded presence at the Banff World Media Festival (BANFF40) to foster opportunities for the sector to grow and export songs.

Create Canada takes place from June 7-9, 2019, in Calgary at the National Music Centre (Studio Bell).

Participating songwriters for Create include Bobby John (Bloc Notes), Chris Kirby (Sound Of Pop), Claire Ridgely (Outloud), GUS (Cadence/MapleCore), James Baley (Six Shooter), Joshua Moreno (Bloc Notes), Reeny Smith (Cymba Music Publishing), and SORAN (Editorial Avenue).

Participating producers include Corey LeRue (Hyvetown Music), Denise De’ion, MYYA, and Dan Davidson (Redbrick). De’ion and MYYA are participants in CMPA’s Women in the Studio program which aims to increase the presence of female producers in the music industry.

Following Create, Canada’s music publishers will head to the 40th anniversary of BANFF40 with a delegation to represent the sector amongst global media leaders. This event will help Canada’s music publishers, most of whom are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), forge connections across film, television, games and with business leaders to increase export opportunities for Canadian songs on global screens.

Canada’s music publishers will host a lunch and learn panel discussion titled Inside the Song: Hidden Revenue Sources Through Music on June 10 at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. Featuring a case study of the massively successful Paw Patrol,  the panelists will demonstrate how, when correctly managed, music rights can add ancillary, ongoing revenue streams  from around the world.

Speakers include Jodie Ferneyhough (CCS Rights Management) and composers Brian Pickett and Graeme Cornies (Voodoo Highway Music and Post). The discussion is moderated by Deb Day (Innovate By Day) and features a special performance by Halifax artist Reeny Smith.

“Export is a critical driver of growth in Canada’s music publishing industry, with two-thirds of revenues deriving from foreign sources. Canada’s music publishers are proud to be creating opportunities for Canadian songs to be heard on screens and in video games, through programs like Create and partnerships with BANFF,” says Margaret McGuffin, Executive Director of the Canadian Music Publishers Association. “Global connections are critical to sustained growth in the industry.”

The next planned international Create mission will be in the United Kingdom later this year.
