CREATE Atlanta

Music Publishers Canada (MPC) was delighted to travel to Atlanta, Georgia from October 29 to November 2, 2023 for its first ever CREATE Atlanta trade mission. Partnering with AIMP, AIMP’s new Atlanta chapter, and MMF-US, MPC participated in “AIMP Atlanta and Friends | Creative and Business Summit” while also organizing its own b2b meetings for the delegation

The MPC delegation included 23 people and consisted of Canadian publisher members (including NXTGen publishers), European publisher members representing the Independent Music Publishers International Forum (IMPF), Canadian songwriters, and representatives of CMRRA, SOCAN, and Ontario Creates. MPC was especially pleased to welcome two participants of the Ontario Creates AcceleratiON program.

The mission began on Sunday, October 29 with a cocktail mixer sponsored by IMPF. Members of the delegation had a chance to meet each other as well as AIMP Atlanta’s Chapter President, Tony Alexander. The next day the delegation visited Sony Music Publishing Atlanta’s space where they enjoyed two panels programmed by MPC. The panels featured members of Atlanta’s music and entertainment industry, including music producers, and representatives from management companies, music publishers, DSPs, entertainment law firms, and the Georgia Department of Economic Development. The day was capped off with a mixer where the delegation was able to mingle and network with the panelists and other invited guests.

On the second full day of programming, the delegation toured film and music studios in Atlanta, including a rare tour of the Tyler Perry Studios. The following day, MPC hosted Meet the Music Supervisors Atlanta with five Atlanta-based music supervisors. Later in the day, as well as on their final day, the delegation participated in the MMF-US & AIMP Industry Summit at 4U Recording Atlanta.

Tanya Van Luven, Director, Publisher Relations at SOCAN, participated in a panel entitled “Know Your Rights: Managing Your Music Licensing Portfolio” with other PROs and a representative from MMF US, while MPC CEO McGuffin moderated a panel entitled “The Music World Is Different Outside the US, with IMPF delegation publishers Nuno Saraiva (Lusitanian Music Publishing) and David Alexander (The Music Industry) also featured.

As the publisher programming was taking place, AIMP Atlanta organized a two-day song camp at 4U Recording Atlanta, featuring Atlantan and Canadian songwriters, producers, and artists. The Canadian participants were Chad Price (CYMBA Music Publishing), eXa (Bloc Notes Music), and Denise De’ion (Women in the Studio 2019 producer). Summit participants were able to listen to a selection of the songs produced on the last day of the conference.

MPC would like to thank FACTOR, the Government of Canada, Ontario Creates, IMPF, and AIMP New York for their support.
